According to the Kyoto Protocol, an increase in forest cover is considered to enhance the absorption of C_2. Remote sensing may be useful to estimate this. In this study, we assessed changes in the area of forest cover ("ARD": afforestation, reforestation, deforestation) using two different times of satellite image, and verified the accuracy of results. We analyzed two LANDSAT TM images of 1989 and 2001 at Higashishirakawa-mura in Gifu prefecture. The accurate ground truth was made from mosaiked ortho-photo in 1990 and IKONOS image in 2003 referring to a field investigation and existing information. And the extracted ARD by the differential image of TM each bands were compared with the ground truth. In this study we found band 3,5, and 7 of TM was suitable for ARD extraction. To verify the accuracy of the extraction, producer's accuracy, user's accuracy, and Kappa coefficient (KHAT) were calculated for each bands. The highest KHAT was 0.46 at band?
