PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small Faraday rotator that includes a magnet body having a through-hole and a Faraday element assembled in the through-hole and has excellent optical characteristics while eliminating external pressure added to the Faraday element, and to provide a method for holding a Faraday element in a Faraday rotator.SOLUTION: The Faraday rotator includes the magnet body composed of: a first magnet 21 magnetized in a direction perpendicular to an optical axis and heading to the optical axis; a second magnet 22 magnetized in a direction perpendicular to the optical axis and parting from the optical axis; and a third magnet 23 disposed between the above two magnets and magnetized in a direction parallel to the optical axis and from the second magnet to the first magnet. A through-hole (hole) where a Faraday element 25 having paramagnetism is disposed is formed in the magnets; and the magnetized Faraday element 25 is held in a floating state in the through-hole by the magnetic force of the first magnet 21 and of the second magnet 22.
