The initiation of mammalian pubeity requires an increased pulsatile secretion of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), the neuropeptide controlling sexual development, from specialized neurons of the hypothala-mus. This increase is brought about by changes in the activity of neuronal and astroglial subsets functionally connected to the GnRH neuronal network. Whether the control of GnRH secretion via cell-cell communication involves the participation of cells born postnatally is not known We have identified newborn cells in the postnatal hypothalamus by injecting bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) on postnatal (PN) days 8, 12, 20 or 24 (single ip injection at 300 mg/kg) and examining the incorporation of the nucle-oside into cell nuclei by immunohistochemistry at various intervals thereafter (2 h, 24 h or 7 days).
