Knowledge is valuable when it's applied, not when it's stored-so portals must make it useful to users. The latest Butler Group survey finds that '79 per cent of IT directors and CEOs intend to implement a portal, or have already done so'. But in itself a portal has no value. Even the word 'portal' suggests an expensive, overornate, crumbling, neo-classical edifice that takes you nowhere and was probably built to hide the fact that there isn't anything of substance the other side. I've always preferred more ordinary words, such as 'door' and 'gateway' - gateway to the Scottish Highlands' - where the emphasis is not on the door itself but on what you will find if you go through it.
