One pie maker, 48 ginger beer makers, 1,820 carpenters and two chimney sweeps were among users of Manchester's already established public library service in 1864. Last month the serice celebrated its 150th anniversary and while looking back over the years provides an insight into the social history of the era, this is a service with its sights set very much on the future.
