US governor City Locke's recent attempt to close the Washington State Library in order to save US9 nillion has been seen as a wake-up call by libraries across the US. The governor's move was defeated after an intensive lobbying campaign in Washington State. When US legislators came to vote on the closure proposal on 14 March 2002, they decided to save the institution, which has existed since 1853.
