摘要

Reforms of the 1990s in Russia changed the vegetable growing industry profile in the Kuban region, where nearly 70% of cultivation was carried out by private growers. Production of vegetables in large specialized farms rapidly decreased, and the cost of cultivation continues to grow while productivity decreases. Data on production of vegetables in the region compared with demand, production of vegetables for processed food (1990-2003), and profitability of various crops (1999-2002) are tabulated. The decrease in production mainly affected vegetable processing plants. The recovery of vegetable growing needs to start with the introduction of modern vegetable growing technologies, such as the careful selection of cultivars, and the use of drip irrigation. The bulk of vegetable production should be on farms with land area no less than 200-300 ha. It is concluded that unless the Russian government takes drastic measures in assisting development of the industry, the forthcoming joining of the WTO may threaten the existence of vegetable growing in Russia.
