Several long-term comparison plots of American elm (Ulmus americana) clones that have shown Dutch elm disease (DED) tolerance, which was caused by Ophiostoma ulmi, were established in some parts of USA (New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio and other sites). Results showed that the average height of the six clones was: 'Jefferson'- 45 to 65 cm, 'New Harmony'- 60 to 90 cm, 'Patriot', 'Princeton' and 'Prospector'- 90 cm, and 'Valley Forge'- 60 cm. All clones were fast growing and dormant, although mature elms were flowering in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. 'Princeton', the control clone, required the least trimming and staking and believed that its moderate DED tolerance together with good sanitation will keep it disease free.
