Editorial: Towards a more sophisticated approach to eating disorders in sport research

Athletes, male and female, develop eating disorders (Petrie & Greenleaf, 2012). There is also evidence that elite female athletes competing in aesthetic sports are likely to be at increased risk of eating disorders compared to male athletes (Fortes, Kakeshita, Almeida, Gomes, & Ferreira, 2014), non-aesthetic sports athletes (Torstveit, Rosenvinge, & Sundgot-Borgen, 2008) and the general population (Martinsen, & Sundgot-Borgen, 2013). The pressures associated with a competitive sporting environment facilitate the occurrence of unhealthy and often dangerous eating attitudes and behaviors (Reel, Petrie, SooHoo, & Anderson, 2013). There is, however, much in the area of athletes and eating disorders that is less known, such as the precise mechanisms that underlie the development of eating disorders in athletes and how eating disorders and body image concerns impact athletes' life experiences. Accordingly, there is a lack of efficacious intervention programs and evidencebased athlete-specific treatment strategies. In the simplest terms, the majority of sport psychology scholars have focused on identifying the extent of the problem (e.g. prevalence), with less attention being given to exploring the factors associated with causal-risk and resolution.
