The first realistic simulation systems were developed for air force pilots, the Vietnam war having showed that the very first missions were those that caused the highest number of casualties. Unsurprisingly, the same phenomenon applies to the infantryman: according to a Darpa survey the learning curve starts to stabilise after the first 100 days in operation, during which 40% of infantry fatalities occur. True realistic training definitely was needed.
