Fisheries stock assessments by the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) have historically been based on data from commercial landings and fisheries-independent bottom trawl surveys. Underwater acoustic technology is presently being implemented by the NEFSC as an alternative approach to obtain independent abundance and biomass indices for pelagic fish species in the Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank regions of the Northwest Atlantic. During 1995-1997, acoustic cruises were conducted to evaluate a multiple-frequency Simrad EK500 scientific echosounder (12 kHz single beam, and 38 and 120 kHz split beams), midwater trawls, and underwater video. Beginning in 1998, acoustic surveys of Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) have been conducted to provide abundance and biomass estimates. Midwater trawl gear and underwater video have been used to verify species composition of acoustic backscattering. Distributions of Atlantic herring during fall surveys are spatially and temporally heterogeneous which confounds estimates of abundance and biomass. Integration of acoustic data with oceanographic and biological databases at the NEFSC significantly enhances the utility of fisheries acoustic methods for pelagic fish assessment.
