The Special Events Imager (SEI) is a proposed sensor that would be flown on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) to acquire multispectral visible and near infrared images of the Earth's surface at high spatial (300 meter) and temporal (ca. 15 minutes) resolution. Its data would fill an existing gap in the time-space domain of available observations obtained from existing space-borne sensors and permit short-term events of the ocean, land, and atmosphere to be detected, monitored, and quantified. These data, would allow the investigation of processes of the dynamic coastal ocean, such as tidal mixing, and the study of ephemeral events in the terrestrial and atmospheric environments, including storm development and volcanic ash plumes. The high frequency revisit rate would also allow the effects of tidal aliasing inherent in imagery obtained from sun-synchronous polar orbiters to be quantified and possibly removed. Furthermore, the high temporal coverage is likely to increase the cloud-free area in a region of broken clouds through cloud filtering and compositing of multiple images, strengthening our ability to appraise existing conditions.
