Close range, hyerspectral reflectance measurements of healthy indo-pacific and Caribbean corals

Close range reflectance measurements were made with healthy coral specimens in the northern Red Sea at Eilat, Israel and in the western Caribbean Sea at Roatan and Barbareta Islands, Honduras. Measurements were made with an Ocean Optics SD 1000 spectroradiometer and 20 m fiber optics cables with the fiber tips held by SCUBA divers in a nadir view about 3-5 cm above the coral surface. We used healthy specimens, growing at depths between about 1 and 7 meters, with no obvious patterns of physical disturbance, bleaching, or disease. No attempts were made in this study to measure community structure at or above the water surface. We particularly focused on spectral absorption features related to the algal symbionts of corals. Absorption troughs related to specific pigments such as chlorophyll a and major carotenoids were evident in most spectra. Light reflectance by corals is largely explainable by the interaction of white mineral layer scattering and absorption patterns by endosymbiotic algae. A strong chlorophyll a absorption feature near 670 nm and a red edge effect with strongly higher NIR reflectance was consistently observed.
