1533079 Change-speed gear control DEERE & CO 5 Sept 1977 [4 Sept 1976] 37001/77 Heading F2D An infinitely-variable gear, an expanding pulley gear as described, upstream of a clutch, has its ratio altered to reduce output speed to a minimum when the clutch is disengaged. The ratio is set by the amount of hydraulic fluid between a manually operated valve 4 and an actuator. 28. The actuator 28 also communicates with a chamber 82 of a cylinder 80. Venting of the other chamber 84 of cylinder 80 when the clutch is disengaged increases transmission ratio to reduce output speed. Chamber 84 is refilled when the clutch is re-engaged. The embodiment shown has a clutch pedal 66 which closes a switch 134 when the clutch is disengaged. This operates solenoid 126 to move a valve 104 to position II to vent chamber 84. When the chamber 84 is vented and pedal 66 released, switches 136 and 142 closed, the valve is moved to position III, chamber 84 is refilled, switch 142 opens, and valve 104 returns to position I. Other embodiments use mechanical connections instead of electricity (Figs. 1 to 3, not shown). The clutch may be a reversing clutch of forward and reverse gearing.
