The system uses a CCD camera mounted on a vehicle that obtains an image of the road scene. The camera output is fed to an image processor that carries out a horizontal symmetry identification of the edge profile of any vehicle within the field of view. A variance evaluation is carried out on the information and defined threshold values to identify the vehicle.
