Pregnant rats are hyperphagic, leading to increased fat deposition and a rise in plasma concentrations of the adipose-derived hormone leptin. This elevated leptin would normally be expected to inhibit food intake, but central leptin resistance develops during mid-pregnancy allowing increased food intake to be maintained and excess energy stored as fat to help meet the future metabolic demands of lactation,, Pseudopregnant (PSP) rats are also hyperphagic but do not become leptin resistant, even when given progesterone implants to extend PSP (ExPSP) beyond the time that resistance develops during pregnancy.
