In many neurons, action potentials (AP) are initiated in the soma/axon hillock. However, dendrites of some inter -neurons and olfactory neurons express active conductances, allowing those dendrites to generate AP. Olfactory neurons share embryonic origins with GnRH neurons, while interneurons share functional characteristics with these cells. Using our multi-compartment models, we asked whether AP in GnRH neurons could be initiated in dendrites. We incorporated voltage-gated sodium channels into dendrites of our model and then applied small simulated current injection pulses to somata or dendrites and monitored somatic and dendritic voltage In our model, AP were observed at the soma for current injection at the soma and all along the dendrite.
