Emotional stimuli like stress are known to influence brain function and behavior via complex CNS pathways and precipitate anxiety-like states and reports indicate that there is pharmacological association between stress, anxiety and seizure susceptibility Melatonin is a pineal hormone involved in behavioral and endocrinal regulation, and the present study evaluated the effects of melatonin on experimentally induced anxiety and seizures in rats. Restraint stress reduced the number of entries and time spent in the open arms of the elevated plus maze (EPM) and these were antagonized by diazepam (1 mg/kg), ascorbic acid (100 mg/kg), and melatonin (25-200 mg/kg) in a dose related manner.
