Most rail transit systems are already electrified. Yet battery, fuel cell, and induction technologies that have changed the bus sector have also enabled new options for rail transit. Battery-electric propulsion has enabled not only the so-called wireless streetcar and light rail services in a growing number of cities in the U.S. and throughout the world. Batteries have also enabled some self-propelled and locomotive-hauled commuter and freight rail services.
