Recent experience freezing a large vertical water-filled pipe demonstrated the value of measuring pipe surface heat fluxes during the freezing operation, a technique developed at the University of Southampton. The heat flux data can be used as a means of monitoring ice-plug development, ensuring that a freeze seal is complete, and as an additional tool to help decide whether a difficult operation is worth continuing.
