Few questions have provoked such agonizing reflection within a profession as the examination of the intellectual middle ground between chemistry and chemical engineering.For a major part of the last century,chemical engineers worked and learned in a market dominated by the oil industry and the large commodity chemicals companies.The chemistry involved was considered known,slow to change and thus was gradually marginalized.There were better economic gains to be had from understanding heat mass and momentum transfer,refining unit operations and developing flow sheeting,optimization and control algorithms.Some,reacting to the negative public connotations of the word 'chemical',even argued for a re-naming of the discipline to Process Engineering.
