摘要

Since the United States of America had fought a war overseas and its continental territory was never occupied by any of the Axis powers, it could welcome home virtually all its veterans as heroes after the Second World War. Preferential treatment was mandated in the United States Servicemen's Readjustment Act, better known as the GI Bill of Rights of 22 June 1944. To this the experience of the population of the other side in the escalating Cold War provides a sharp contrast. Because it was not just a matter of welcoming home victorious troops, the reintegration of war veterans into the postwar Soviet Union was a much less straightforward process than in the USA. Soviet servicemen and women returned home who had been captured by the Nazi-led forces and were therefore suspected of cowardly and treasonous behaviour.
