摘要

Anger is mounting over a proposal to dynamite the remaining Red Road housing tower blocks in Glasgow as part of the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony. Five of the six remaining 30-storey towers are to be demolished in a controlled explosion for a global TV spectacle that the Games' organisers described as 'a bold and dramatic statement of intent'. But critics claim it sends out the wrong message to the rest of the Commonwealth, is insensitive to local people and could be dangerous. At the time of going to press, a petition to stop the demolition had attracted almost 8,800 signatures. Len Bunton, the son of the flats'original architect, Sam Bunton, who died in 1974, has written to Scotland's first minister Alex Salmond and Glasgow City Council leader Gordon Matheson in an attempt to get the decision to blow down the flats reversed. He said the decision to demolish the flats as an act of celebration was the 'worst piece of political judgement imaginable'.
