Like many other laboratories worldwide, the ONERA/DEFA is currently working on a project concerned with the creation of a micro-energy source capable of delivering between 10 and 100 W, for supplying electricity to autonomous devices (portable electronic systems, robots, micro-drones ...). Several designs of micro-systems have been compared: micro Wankel engines, micro piston engines, micro gas turbines, thermo-electrical effect... It seems that the micro-turbine is particularly interesting. It can achieve power/weight ratios of around 1000 W/kg, even if the overall energy conversion efficiency does not exceed 3%, as compared to 200 W/kg for the best existing batteries.
