Ammonia tank testing with acoustic emission (AE) dates back to the early 1980s and Monsanto's development of the technique for use on in-service vessels including refrigerated ammonia tanks. This followed development of the successful recommended practice for AE testing of fibreglass equipment. In the case of ammonia tanks, AE testing was used to address fabrication quality issues and provide a non-intrusive means of monitoring tank condition.
