In past ES&T articles, we've dis- cussed the development of digital television standards by the Advanced Television Systems Committee or ATSC. Since 1987, the ATSC sorted through 23 design concepts for advanced television systems and eventually combined the four best designs into a prototype system. During this process, the ATSC settled on proposals given by the "Grand Alliance"—a consortium consisting of AT&T, David Sarnoff Research Center, General Instrument Corporation, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Philips Consumer Electronics, Thomson Consumer Electronics, and Zenith Electronics Corporation.
