In a past issue, I pointed out that you can raise your IQ (intelligence quotient) by as much as 10 points by studying vocabulary. I'm sure that that was a surprise to some readers, but it is true. That fact has been used as a criticism of IQ testing. A child raised by professionals is exposed to a broader range of vocabulary words than is a child raised by parents who are less educated. The argument against IQ tests is that intelligence should not be dependent only on vocabulary. For example, a young college graduate is moved next door to an Eskimo in the bitter cold north.
