This paper sets out the rationale behind recent changes to the governance of the Academy of Social Sciences. It explains the changes that have been implemented, the reasons they were felt to be necessary and the impact the constitution has on the ability of the Academy to deliver its mission. It sets out the general principles governing the detailed changes and tries to give a flavour for the debate that lay behind the decision to change.
