It sometimes seems as if all the world is on the move. The early retired, international students, terrorists, holidaymakers, business people, slaves, sports stars, asylum seekers, backpackers and sports fans-these and many others seem to find the contemporary world is their oyster. The scale of this travelling is immense. By 2010 there will be at least 1 billion legal international arrivals each year (compared with 25 million in 1950); there are 4 million air passengers each day; at anyone time 360,000 passengers are in flight above the USA, a city in the sky; and there are over 600 million cars across the globe. US citizens in 1800 travelled 50 metres a day-they now travel 50 km a day. Today world citizens move 23 billion km; by 2050 it is predicted that that will have increased fourfold to 106 billion km.
