Concerns have been raised by some engineers towards the Increasing trend during the past 15 years to construct shallower pile caps and column bases for building structures. These concerns also extend to the thickness of transfer slabs, transfer beams and even heavily loaded roof slabs. Robin Whittle reports. The vertical reinforcing bars in concrete columns and piles are anchored into bases and pile caps. Eurocode 2 outlines methods for calculating the minimum anchorage length required for such reinforcement. Some foundations are currently being designed and constructed with depths smaller than required by Eurocode 2 for the compression anchorage bond.
