About ten years ago an article in Concrete told the story of what had occurred in the UK market where fibres had been used in applications such as industrial flooring, external pavements and of course tunnelling. Now 20 years on, there is much more to tell; a lot has happened regarding the use of fibres in the tunnelling industry, not just in the UK but globally - more research, new guidance documents, European Standards for fibres, the relevant testing criteria, evolving performance-based specifications, CE markings and, of course, many more projects providing the global industry with much more valuable experience. Now in Australia and New Zealand the use of steel-fibre-reinforced concrete for tunnelling works is becoming established after many years of limited use in civil tunnel construction.
