Heartlands is a £35 million development, led by Cornwall Council, which is transforming a disused tin mine into a thriving cultural landscape and social enterprise. When finished, the 8-hectare site in Pool, Cornwall, will feature a World Heritage Exhibition on Cornish Mining, parkland, gardens, community and event space. Made possible by a Big Lottery Fund grant of £22.3 million and additional funding from the Homes and Communities agency, Heartlands is due to open at the end of 2011. Public art and inclusive design is central to Heartlands; commissioned artist Walter Jack explains how a chance encounter with concrete has led to the creation of his experimental Crushedwall.
