Specifying Sustainable Concrete: understanding the role of constituent materials The purpose of this publication is to help designers in optimising concrete's sustainable credentials through specification. It does this by offering information on the specification of concrete to BS 8500 and discussion on the responsible sourcing of materials to BES 6001. Other standards are included as appropriate. The environmental aspects of each constituent of concrete are explored, from the utilisation of recycled and secondary aggregates and the impact of their transportation, to the embodied CO_2 of cement and cementitious additions and the sustainability accreditation of reinforcement. Also presented are case studies of various sustainable projects such as Underhill House, the first UK PassivHaus, and The Shard in London, about to be the tallest building in the uk.
