Where concrete is exposed to freezing and thawing conditions there is a risk of surface, or more serious, degradation. In simple terms this is caused by any water In saturated concrete freezing and expanding, and where this ice has no voids to expand Into then it damages the concrete. The depth or severity of the damage will depend on the depth of saturation and freezing, as well as the number of freezing and thawing cycles. Jim Troy from Tarmac reports.
