Walsh was subcontracted to design the post-tensioned (PT) floors from levels 1-10, with a mezzanine floor level 4.5. This involved the individual design and detailing of 144 separate pours. The concrete strength class was C35/45 for the internal pours and C40/50 for the external pours. The slab thickness was 250mm on the level 1 car park, 300mm for the clinical floors, 275mm for the level 10 plant-room floor and a minimum of 350mm for the level 2 skirt. The layout was a regular 7.8 × 7.8m grid, which made the design relatively straightforward (Figures 1 and 2). The difficulty lay in the sheer size of the project, meaning that there were a large number of different joints to join the slab together, which were carefully placed for slab movement and shrinkage, to isolate cores and to divide the slabs into manageable pours. At the tender stage, it was decided that instead of using a boot joint (as seen in Figure 3) at the movement joints, shear load connectors would be used. This would decrease the amount of time required to construct the slab and also produce a more desired flat soffit, making M&E and finishes easier to install.
