Acommon myth is that cracks in concrete lead to the corrosion of the underlying reinforcement. A casual inspection of concrete with corroding reinforcement, such as that in Figure 1, supports this mistaken view as there is often a crack associated with the rusting reinforcement. The actual mechanism for the majority of cases where corrosion of reinforcement occurs is the permeation of chlorides or carbon dioxide through the cover concrete, which combined with moisture and oxygen leads to corrosion of the reinforcement. The expansive nature of the corrosion reaction pushes the concrete off the reinforcement, causing cracking, through which the visible corrosion products leak, as shown in Figure 1.
