That the Government has toughened up subject papers and marking - as well as introduced a ridiculous new GCSE grading system (farewell A-G, hello 9-1) - could further skew the available career options in favour of the academically inclined. A switch from practical and coursework-based GCSEs to one predicated almost entirely on exam success has seen some schools introduce vocational BTECs for pupils choosing their options, to supplant GCSE courses. Equally, as many employers will be aware, the gap between academic excellence and real-life practical nous can be a chasm, and one only realised when hiring university graduates.
