Plant-parasitic Nematodes Associated With Banana Crop in Egypt

Banana is one of the major crops in Egypt. Much attention was given to the importance of nematodes attacking this crop. Soil and root samples of banana usually yield various nematode forms. Five to eight genera of nematodes representing ecto and endo-parasitic forms were recovered from the banana orchards grown in four Nile Delta and in four Upper Egypt Governorates with different population densities, frequencies of occurrence and prominence values. The root-knot nematodes, Meloidogyne spp. and the spiral nematodes, Helicotylenchus spp. are the major nematode pests on banana roots. The presence of these genera in relative abundance suggests that they may be of potential significance as pests of banana cultivars. The incidence of other six genera of nematodes at low population densities, percentage of frequency and prominence values was also reported. Occurrence, densities and prominence values of the surveyed nematodes associated with banana roots are recorded in relation to different locations and banana cultivars. Generally, the nematode genera associated with banana orchards of the Upper Egypt Governorates were less in the previous parameters than of the Nile Delta Governorates. Distribution of banana nematodes was found to be affected by the different agro-ecosystems prevailing in both Nile Delta and Upper Egypt.
