This study's objective is twofold: to gain an understanding of the causes of poor reliability in the sand flow test with a 0.08/2-mm particle size fraction, as set forth in French standards NF P 18-564 and European standards NF EN 933-6; and to propose an economical and efficient solution for improving this reliability. The study indicates that 90% of inter-laboratory variance, which is responsible for poor testing reliability, can be explained by uncertainty as the operator introduces a sand sample into the flow unit. In seeking to reduce this level of uncertainty, a prototype feeder was designed and then evaluated. Test results showed that the presence of a feeder served to decrease this uncertainty to a negligible amount. By using the prototype feeder developed at the CECP prototype center in Rouen (Normandy), it would seem that reproducibility of the sand flow test may be divided by a factor of three. This finding, which solidly meets category requirements stipulated in both French and European product standards (XP P 18-540 and NF EN 13043, respectively), will be the focus of an upcoming validation effort within the scope of a cross-testing experiments.
