摘要

In the previous edition, I examined the difficulties identifying the builders of some of the ocean-going ships built along the Tamar River. This commentary discusses a related ambiguity - what types of timbers were used in this ship construction. We can assert with confidence that the structural timbers used in the Tamar Valley shipyards were generally felled and worked close to the shipyards, on the river plains. Even in the later 1840s when Tamar Valley shipbuilding was at its peak, knowledge of the relative virtues of potential native shipbuilding timbers was very limited. This becomes clear in the controversy about timbers used to construct the ship Harpley at the Paterson brothers' shipyard in 1847.
