The Indian Ocean has wrongly been regarded as a strategic backwater, mainly due to a Cold War focus on the Atlantic and Pacific oceans; but with the Cold War long over, and the growing economic and naval might of India, plus the critical energy flows from the Middle East to North Asia, it is now regarded as being strategically important.
