摘要

Trade by sea has always been vulnerable to attack and the first 'navies' were created to protect commercial shipping from 'pirates'. While piracy has existed for millennia, indeed for as long as man has gone to sea, and 'legal' piracy through privateering existed for about 700 years, any public memory of attacks on shipping nowadays would go back to the Battle of the Atlantic in World War Ⅱ. What was unique in the 20~(th) century was the conduct of a guerre de course (attacks on commerce) by Germany against the allies, but Britain in particular, during both world wars. More specifically, it was the use of the new capability - the submarine as the tool of choice used to conduct these attacks. This monograph provides a brief overview of the submarine into naval service, its eventual use in war, and the difficulties the British faced in trying to defeat it in World War Ⅰ.
