Maritime security has been 'the' subject to write about over the past decade, as the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States led to a re-examination of the vulnerability of the international shipping and port industries. Of course there were a myriad of other traditional and non-traditional maritime security issues prior to the events of 2001, but it took that event for concerted analysis and action by governments.
