Transportation is a major facilitator of urbanisation, industrialisation and international trade, to name but a few activities upon which it impacts. While aspects of the transport system today have evolved over millennia, recent technological developments over the past century have increased the efficiency and the complexity of various modes of transport. Indeed, it is this complexity, due to the integrated nature of these modes, that has led to (or created) the supply/commodity/transport chains that form the base of the current global economic system.
