Extreme pressure (EP) tests, such as the D2509 Timken EP and the D2596 4-Ball EP, are commonly used to evaluate load-carrying properties and grease performance. Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDTP), sulfur extreme pressure agent (S-EP), and antimony dialkyldithiocarbamate compounds represent traditional antiwear (AW) and EP agents formulated into greases to provide the necessary protection under boundary lubrication conditions. Previous work compared surface chemistry of tribochemical films formed by simple lithium greases formulated with these additives using surface analytical techniques such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning Auger microscopy (SAM). This paper focuses on evaluating and comparing additive performance in both simple lithium and lithium complex greases and aims to explain differences in load response and film formation. Test parts from the D2509 Timken were run and analyzed to study films obtained with different grease-additive combinations using XPS. This information will help improve the understanding of films formed by interactions of greases, additives and surfaces.
