Continuous casting machines (hereinafter called "CCMs") are the most important equipment that crucially affect the production capacity of steel plants. Up until the early 1970s, aluminum complex grease had been primarily applied to bearings of CCMs due to its good heat and water resistance. In 1980s, however, highly viscous oil-based aliphatic diurea grease with enhanced thermal resistance was developed and began to be utilized in the steel industry. In recent years, steel manufacturers have employed this type of urea grease extensively, and a study has been made on film formed by the grease. Also, it has been reported that the thickener of diurea grease effectively contributed to forming a thicker oil film and thus to lengthening the fatigue life of bearings.
