1. Both Timken methods [ASTM D 2509 and D 2782] operate under true boundary conditions and differences seen between grease and oil responses are therefore not due to the differences in film thickness between the two media. 2. Differences in mode and delivery rate of the lubricants in each method has no effect on the Timken response of either grease or oil formulations. 3. Differences in response of Timken OK load testing to the same EP additives in fully formulated greases and oils is due to interaction with the surrounding media. The complex network of thickener strands in the grease media either physically reduces the mobility of the EP additives (and therefore their ability to get to the metal surface) or it interferes with the effectiveness of the additive system through chemical interactions or attractive forces. Future work is needed to further investigate the varied responses of additive chemistries with different lubricating media as it relates to performance characteristics of greases under extreme pressure conditions.
