A naphthenic base oil was developed for application in greases for constant velocity joints (CVJs). The developed oil displays an optimal compatibility with chloroprene rubber and thermoplastic elastomers, commonly used in sealing boots for CVJs. The oil has lower volatility than standard naphthenic oils, very good response to oxidation inhibitors, and very good low temperature properties. NLGI grade 2 lithium greases were manufactured based on the above oil, as well as on other naphthenic and paraffinic base oils, for comparison. Grease properties, such as bleeding, elastomer compatibility, and low temperature pumpability were measured. The grease based on the developed base oil display outstanding low temperature properties as well as very good compatibility with TPE and chloroprene.
