In 2001, a dispersion containing lithium hydroxide was found to be effective in making lithium soap greases in the laboratory, and it was immediately obvious that the reaction process to produce the lithium soap thickener was much quicker than conventional approaches using solid lithium hydroxide monohydrate with or without water. This product contained sub-micron sized particles of anhydrous lithium hydroxide in a mineral oil containing a dispersant to prevent aggregation and sedimentation. This reagent was found to be very effective in making all types of lithium greases (simple and complex) using simple reaction conditions. At the NLGI conference in 2004, a paper was presented on this technology that described the effectiveness of this technology in making lithium soap greases. Since then, the product has been further developed such that the concentration of LiOH has been significantly increased without any detriment to stability. Development work has been carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of using this new dispersion to make lithium greases, both simple and complex. The benefits of using this material - fast reaction time, ease of use, better handling characteristics -have been retained. Good quality greases have been made that compare well to the more traditionally manufactured lithium greases. Also, performance of these greases when treated with performance additives has been excellent.
