"High" is a relative term when characterizing temperature conditions. There are many criteria to consider when selecting a high-temperature grease for hot equipment moving elements lubricated with grease, for example a bearing. The selection must include consideration of oil type, viscosity and viscosity index; thickener type, stability of the oil/thickener composition, additive composition and properties, ambient temperature, operating temperature, atmospheric contamination, loading, speed, re-lubrication intervals, etc. As a result of the various details that need to be established, the selection of greases that must accommodate extreme temperature conditions poses some of the more challenging lubrication decisions. Reference will be made to several case studies of equipment operating at high temperature, the environment it works in, the demands put on it and the types of potential failures if the correct grease and lubrication practices are not used.
